Paul Stamatiou’s Thoughts on Twitter, Mastodon, and owning your data says many of the things I’ve been thinking but unable to articulate as I start stumbling into the Fediverse and the Indie Web. So much is focused on how one publishes (posting here, federating there, syndicating there) and not on the reader experience: how do I discover new users, interesting content, and folks I might know from other communities?
Self-hosting (using this WordPress instance as an ActivityPub publisher) also changes that reader experience, in that ultimately it makes discovery more difficult – it’s easy to push content out to anyone listening but harder to interact meaningfully.
Ultimately he mentions going back to an RSS reader – guess that’s likely my own next step as well.
